Tether (USDT) is the undisputed king of cryptocurrency trading pairs and cross-border settlement. However, Tether does not have its own blockchain. It exists as a smart contract on over a dozen different networks. Choosing which flavor of USDT to use for a swap impacts your bottom line.
The Heavyweight: Ethereum (ERC-20)
ERC-20 USDT is the institutional standard. Almost every decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol, smart contract, and institutional custodian supports it natively.
The drawback is cost. Moving ERC-20 USDT requires paying Ethereum gas fees in ETH. During peak network congestion, a simple transfer can cost upwards of $20 to $50. It is inefficient for swapping small amounts, but unrivaled for deep liquidity when exchanging millions of dollars.
The Retail Favorite: Tron (TRC-20)
TRC-20 USDT carries the highest transaction volume of any stablecoin network by a wide margin. Centralized exchanges heavily promote Tron because a transfer typically settles in under two minutes and costs less than $1 in TRX.

The EVM Challengers: BSC and Polygon
